Washington, D.C. – House Majority PAC congratulates Representative-Elect Katie Porter on her victory in California’s 45th Congressional District.
“Voters sent a strong message by electing Katie Porter – they want a Representative who will stand up for them and their families, not the ultra-rich and special interests,” said House Majority PAC Executive Director Charlie Kelly. “House Majority PAC was excited to play a role in Porter’s fight to replace a Paul Ryan loyalist with a leader for southern California.”
CA-45 is located in Orange County, which although it went for Hillary Clinton in 2016, has traditionally been a Republican stronghold. In the summer, HMP polling showed that this race was going to be one of the toughest California districts to win. Yet, as Election Day approached the race tightened significantly, partly due to Republican incumbent Congresswoman Mimi Walters’ voting record, which provided an opening and made this an increasingly strong pick-up opportunity.
HMP targeted CA-45 early with a digital ad, in partnership with Priorities USA Action, which slammed Walters for voting to impose a devastating “Age Tax” on older Californians.
In the fall of 2018, HMP launched a TV ad in the Los Angeles media market, showcasing Mimi Walters’ Trump score – voting with Donald Trump 99 percent of the time. Walters took over $200,000 from insurance interests and voted for a health care plan that would strip protections for people living with pre-existing conditions and slap an “Age Tax” on older Californians.
HMP also partnered with Priorities USA Action on a digital program that highlighted Walters’ support for the GOP tax plan and Congressional Republicans' plans to make deep cuts to Medicare and Social Security in order to pay for it.
Additionally, HMP’s campaign in CA-45 included a multi-piece direct mail program.
