House Republicans Vote to End Medicare As We Know It

House Majority PAC To Hold Republicans Accountable For Backing Plan That Balances Tax Breaks for the Rich on the Backs of Seniors, Students, Middle Class

Washington, D.C  - Today, by a vote of 228 to 191, House Republicans approved a budget that finances budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires and Big Oil on the backs of seniors, students and the middle class.

The centerpiece of the Ryan budget is a radical plan to end the Medicare guarantee and decimate the safety net by making seniors pay more for less.

“Once again showing their true stripes, House Republicans voted to effectively end Medicare as we know it while giving the wealthiest among us a nearly $400,000 tax break,” said Andy Stone, Communications Director for House Majority PAC. “The House Majority PAC will be there to hold Republicans accountable for their extreme effort to end the Medicare guarantee and deny future retirees the promise of secure, affordable health coverage.”

Last year, when House Republicans backed a previous version of the Ryan budget, the House Majority PAC began a paid advertising advertising campaign in 10 districts to hold Republicans accountable for their efforts to end Medicare as we know it. And the Republicans felt the heat. According to Time, “Rep. Charlie Bass knew he was in for a rough night” during a town hall event he held when the first six questions he faced were about the Ryan budget. And after an onslaught of negative attention, Rep. Chip Cravaack admitted that even his own father questioned him on the vote.

HMP remains committed to ensuring voters know about Republicans’ repeated votes to end the Medicare guarantee.
