Washington, D.C. – House Majority PAC congratulates Representative-Elect Abby Finkenauer on her victory in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.
“Tonight, IA-01 voters have rejected Rod Blum and his toxic voting record and elected Abby Finkenauer, a Representative who will fight for working families,” said House Majority PAC Executive Director Charlie Kelly. “House Majority PAC is thrilled to have played a role in ensuring that Abby Finkenauer can get to work solving problems for Iowa communities.”
IA-01 was an important seat on the map for Democrats. While the district went for Barack Obama in both 2008 and 2012, it swung to Donald Trump in 2016. Despite this, Democrats saw that this was a good pick-up opportunity, particularly because of Rod Blum’s ethics violations as well as his out-of-touch voting record that put the ultra-rich and special interests ahead of hardworking Iowans.
HMP launched a TV ad, in the Cedar Rapids media market, which slammed Rod Blum for trying to cover up his disastrous health care record. Blum voted for a health care bill that would take away coverage from thousands of Iowans, gut protections for people living with pre-existing conditions, and impose an “Age Tax” on older Americans.
HMP launched a early in the cycle spotlighting Blum’s ethics violations where he put his profits over the health and safety of his constituents. Then in the fall, HMP also partnered with Priorities USA Action on a digital program that highlighted Blum’s support for the GOP tax plan and that in order to pay for it, Republicans want to make deep cuts to essential programs like Medicare and Social Security.
