MEMO: GOP Tariffs Making Your 4th of July Celebrations More Expensive

July 2, 2025

The 4th of July should be a celebration—not another casualty of the GOP trade war. Whether it’s families gathering for backyard BBQs, friends heading to the beach, or towns organizing fireworks displays, Americans are paying more this year thanks to tariffs.

“The GOP tariffs are raising costs on American families, plain and simple, and House Republicans are too spineless to say a word—even as their own constituents pay the price,” said HMP National Press Secretary Katarina Flicker. “Come November 2026, HMP will make sure every vulnerable House Republican is held accountable for breaking their promise to lower costs.”

What’s Getting More Expensive — and Why

 Fireworks
Due to Trump’s 145% tariff on imported fireworks—which account for over 99% of global fireworks production—local businesses are expected to deal with a shortage of fireworks and industry groups are warning that public fireworks displays which typically cost between $7,500 and $15,000 will have to pay $5,000–$15,000 more per display.

 Grills and Charcoal
Trump’s decision to double steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% in June 2025 will skyrocket the costs of barbecue grills, propane tanks, and more. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce projects that a mid-range grill worth $550 could see a price increase of $165 due to tariffs, for a total value of $715.

 Hot Dogs and Burgers
After Trump’s tariffs triggered global retaliation, countries hit back with duties on U.S. agricultural exports—disrupting supply chains and pushing up prices. Ground beef alone is up 7.4% compared to last year, and staples like BBQ sauce, apple pie, ice cream, fresh fruits and vegetables, potatoes, and cornbread are all more expensive.

 Beer, Wine, and Spirits
From aluminum cans to imported liquor, many summer-favorite beverages are significantly more expensive this year due to tariffs—the 50% tariff on steel and aluminum is driving up the cost of domestic beer and seltzers, while tariffs on the E.U. and Mexico will raise costs on everything from French wine to Mexican tequila to Italian Aperol.

 Paper Goods and Party Supplies
Tariffs on paper and plastic products are causing widespread supply chain disruptions, product shrinkage and cost increases on cups, plates, utensils, and decorations—staples of every backyard cookout and July 4th gathering.
