“Immigration Hardliner” Now Trying To Whitewash His Record

Washington, D.C. – It’s been just hours since Rep. Gary Miller was caught deleting from YouTube videos of interviews he gave in which he advocated anti-immigrant positions, touted his Birthright Citizenship bill and discussed his Reclaim American Jobs Caucus. And already Miller’s trying to distract from his extreme, anti-immigrant record.

Miller, the most endangered incumbent in the entire nation, according to political handicapper Stu Rothenberg, faces reelection in a district with a large Latino population and with recent poll results that show 47 percent of respondents would be less likely to support him if he opposed comprehensive immigration reform.

In fact, Miller’s office tells BuzzFeed that Miller “continue[s] to evolve” on this subject.

And yet, Miller’s office would not offer an explanation as to why they removed from YouTube videos of Miller conducting interviews that they once proudly trumpeted. Or whether Miller still supports the policy of self-deportation, for which he used to strongly advocate.

“Today’s actions by Gary Miller serve to remind Inland Empire residents just how much of an anti-immigrant zealot Miller’s been,” said Andy Stone, Communications Director for House Majority PAC. “The truth is that even as this most vulnerable member of Congress tries to whitewash his extreme anti-immigrant record, voters won’t soon forget his calls for immigrant self-deportation.

“It’s hard to tell which is worse: Gary Miller’s hardline, anti-immigrant zealotry or the fact that he’s now trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the people he represents,” Stone continued.
